Laying the Foundation of Success with NUS

The curiosity about the driving force behind successful corporations ignited Praveen Kaur’s passion for learning about the art of business management. The NUS Merit Scholarship has given her a great opportunity to realise her learning goals, be part of a reputable university, and broaden her perspectives. She is convinced that the interdisciplinary and collaborative learning environment at NUS will play a significant role in her personal growth.

Two years into her Business Administration degree, Praveen shares her personal and fulfilling experience on campus life — from getting acquainted with topics beyond her major to being an active member in student organisations.

Learning the Art of Business

I chose Business Administration because I have always been curious about how successful companies make decisions — from the strategies that drive growth to the way people are managed. NUS stood out to me for its strong reputation, and it also offers the flexibility to explore beyond business fundamentals while providing a vibrant campus experience.

Living on campus has allowed me to immerse myself fully in student life and build friendships with people from different disciplines. Particularly through the NUS College programme, I have the opportunity to take interdisciplinary modules on topics such as science and society and global social impact. I find this especially meaningful, as these modules broaden my perspectives beyond my major.

Practicality, Prestige, and (Realising) Potential

Accepting the NUS Merit Scholarship was both a practical and personal decision. On one hand, it is an immense honour to be recognised for my academic and personal achievements. On the other hand, it represents a meaningful step towards financial independence. I am proud to be able to support my university education through my own effort. The scholarship’s prestige also reflects NUS’s confidence in my potential, motivating me to uphold the discipline, integrity, and commitment expected of a scholar.

The scholarship covers tuition fees and offers guaranteed on-campus housing, which has allowed me to live within the NUS College community and experience campus life. In addition, the scholarship offers a guaranteed overseas exchange opportunity, giving me the chance to study abroad and gain global exposure. These opportunities relieve financial stress and enable me to focus fully on learning, exploration, and personal growth.

Closing the Deal With Sincerity and Clarity

The scholarship selection process involved a portal application, and an interview where I shared my values, community involvement, and aspirations for the future. I spoke about the projects I had led that focused on social inclusion and volunteer outreach, as well as my music background upon graduating from the School of the Arts, Singapore. Throughout the interview, I learned that the best approach was simply to be genuine and clear about my goals and ambitions. Rather than trying to give perfect answers, I focused on demonstrating self-awareness and a sense of purpose in how I hope to contribute to society. I believe I was awarded the scholarship because I consistently take initiative, stay adaptable, and set clear goals for myself. Whether in academics, leadership, or community work, I make it a point to step up when challenges arise and take ownership of outcomes. To me, a scholar should not only excel academically but also serve as a catalyst for others by demonstrating drive, empathy, and a genuine commitment to creating positive change in their community. Beyond just grades, I think being a scholar is also about having purpose and perseverance.

Building Real-Life Experiences and Networks

My NUS experience has been vibrant and deeply fulfilling. Beyond academics, I have immersed myself in student organisations that align with my interests and values. I am a member of Women in Business, an interest group focused on empowering the next generation of female leaders within NUS. I currently serve as a Co-Director for the Mentorship Programme, where I help connect female undergraduates with industry professionals, a role that has taught me the importance of community and representation.

I was also part of the NUS Entrepreneurship Society, where I helped organise a regional student-led tech conference, “UNICON 2025”. These experiences, along with case competitions and industry networking events, have helped me grow professionally while building lifelong friendships within the NUS Business School and the NUS College community. The interdisciplinary and collaborative environment here constantly inspires me to keep learning and to stay curious.
