Meet Hayley Lim, a driven first-year Life Sciences undergraduate and proud NUS Global Merit Scholar. Discover how the programme flexibility, special programmes, and vibrant community at NUS have helped shape her academic journey, and learn her tips for acing the scholarship interview.

The Power of Choice

When it came to choosing a university and programme, the Life Sciences programme at NUS was my clear first choice. The ability to specialise in Biomedical Sciences and the flexibility to select programmes that truly align with my interests was an opportunity I couldn’t find elsewhere. I was also drawn to NUS’ unique programmes, like NUS College (NUSC) and the Special Programme in Science (SPS), which not only broaden knowledge but also promote personal growth, reinforcing that NUS was the perfect choice for me.

A Life-Changing Opportunity

Receiving the NUS Global Merit Scholarship was a pivotal moment in my academic journey. It was a huge honour to be selected, and I did not hesitate to accept such a prestigious opportunity! Not to mention, the scholarship perks are incredible. Guaranteed student exchange with an allowance means I can explore studying and living abroad, which is an invaluable opportunity to grow and step out of my comfort zone, and the financial support just makes it better. Additionally, the scholarship covers hostel and laptop expenses, easing my transition into university life. Living on campus at Cinnamon College has been such a huge advantage, especially when it comes to getting to my lectures on time at eight in the morning!

What Sets Scholars Apart

Looking back on the scholarship application process, one piece of advice I would give prospective applicants approaching the interviews is to bring your true, passionate self. What sets scholars apart is a genuine passion for what they care about. This very passion is what the scholarship providers look for, as it drives scholars to contribute to the university and beyond. In my interview, I shared my deep interest in cancer research. I believe my authentic enthusiasm came through to the interviewers, showing them just how committed I am to make a difference in this area.

Scholarship providers are also looking for versatile individuals who possess the ability to juggle multiple responsibilities and thrive in all of them. For me, academics aside, I was also involved in Track and Field, where I won multiple awards and held leadership roles in various clubs. Being versatile has helped me grow in many ways, and I would attribute that as one of the reasons I earned the scholarship.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

As a first-year student, I’ve made the most of the opportunities at NUS. My first semester was a great introduction to university life. I began taking classes for NUS College and SPS and truly enjoyed them. The NUS College classes allowed me to explore topics beyond my major, which was both challenging and exciting, and SPS gave me the opportunity to work on my first research project.

Beyond academics, I’ve also participated in various activities, such as the NUS College Onboarding and Welcome (NOW!) programme, where I met new friends and started to build connections. The NUS community has been incredibly supportive, helping me settle in and find my place here. It’s been an amazing start, and I’m grateful for the journey so far.
