More than just a scholarship, the NUS Merit Scholarship augments Chloe Chan’s long-term personal growth.
Why Did You Choose To Pursue Your Course of Study at Nus?
I chose to pursue Industrial Design as design has always been my passion. However, as I had no prior art or design background, I was fearful of committing to a course that specialised in one specific design field. Thus, I decided to look into potential courses offered by the various universities in Singapore that would best allow me to explore all areas of design. The Industrial Design course at NUS was the most suitable option for me as it gives me the freedom to explore the broad field of design. It also gives me the opportunity to discover what my strengths and weaknesses are, so as to better select the area I would like to specialise in the future.
Why Did You Accept the NUS Merit Scholarship?
I accepted the NUS Merit Scholarship because I believed that it would provide me with a multitude of opportunities that I would not be able to receive elsewhere. Additionally, I believed that the scholarship would provide me with the platform to grow and develop as a person in many different ways during my time here in NUS.
What Was the Selection Process Like?
The selection process was definitely not as daunting as I thought it would be.
Applying for the scholarship was a simple process that only required me to prepare a recommendation letter, as well as to answer a few questions about myself. I had to submit an online application for scholarships, supporting documents and nominate one referee, who would write an online referee report recommending me for the scholarship.
The interview was also a very pleasant one. The panel was friendly and approachable, which made me feel less nervous. The panel took the time to further elaborate on the rigour of the Industrial Design course, and what I should expect during my four years of undergraduate studies at NUS.
Moreover, the selection process was an enriching one. While applying and preparing for the selection process, I was able to discover more about myself in terms of my strengths, as well as areas for improvement. It was an opportunity to reflect on how far I have come through the years and how much more I have to grow.
Why Do You Think You Were Awarded the Scholarship, and What Are the Qualities a Scholar Should Possess?
I believe that I was awarded the scholarship because I am open to all the potential opportunities that I may be presented with. I personally believe that a scholar should have an open mind and the courage to go out there and try new things. A scholar should also have a strong desire to continuously grow and improve in every way possible and constantly work towards becoming the best version of themselves.
What Are the Benefits of Taking up the NUS Merit Scholarship?
Taking up the NUS Merit Scholarship has many benefits, mainly the educational opportunities it presents, and the chance to contribute to the community in an impactful and meaningful way. NUS Merit Scholars are required to participate in community engagement projects during their studies at NUS. The scholarship also provides me with a conducive platform to meet new people and to learn new things through the endless events and workshops available. Additionally, it gives me the opportunity to develop my personal and professional skills while giving back to the community at the same time.
How Has Your NUS Experience Been, and What Programmes and Activities Have You Participated in So Far?
I have taken part in numerous activities within my faculty and hostel – NUS Merit Scholars are guaranteed offers of on-campus accommodation for the first 2 years of undergraduate studies. They include my faculty’s Rag and Flag, Inter-Faculty Games and Inter-Hall Games. Through my course and hostel activities, I have met some of the most inspiring and amazing people, and made many close friends in my first year. All these activities have pushed me to step out of my comfort zone and take part in many events that I never imagined I would in the past. It has given me the opportunity to grow and discover myself, encouraging me to try things that I would likely no longer get the chance to do once I enter the working world.
