Reyhern M Razali, a first-year Geography undergraduate and NUS Global Merit Scholar, has found more than just a university at NUS. Discover how he balances his academic pursuits with a full calendar of weekly karaoke sessions, bowling competitions, and vibrant community life at NUS Pioneer House.
A Continuity of Passion
Since I was young, I’ve been fascinated by trains, rocks, and flags, so I knew Geography was my calling. NUS has one of the best Geography departments in the world and is the only Geography department in Singapore. Many of my teachers, who encouraged me to pursue this field, were NUS alumni, and now some of their professors are teaching me. This sense of continuity, connecting my mentors to my current professors, makes NUS the perfect place to deepen my passion.

The Deal With Scholarships
I wanted to take care of my own university fees and not have my parents worry about it. Receiving the Global Merit Scholarship has allowed me to focus fully on my studies and personal growth without financial stress. Covering tuition and accommodation and providing priority for hostel applications, the scholarship even includes an allowance for overseas studies. This support has given me the confidence to sign up for more extracurricular activities, knowing I have the school’s backing. Moreover, as this is a bond-free scholarship, I have the flexibility to explore various career paths after graduation.
The Interview Experience
I initially applied for the NUS Merit Scholarship and was later shortlisted for the Global Merit Scholarship interview, which was held online and lasted around 15 minutes. The questions weren’t all academic; some touched on my leadership experiences, personal beliefs, and even my hobbies.
During the interview, I remember talking about my love for rocks. I simply presented an authentic version of myself and hoped for the best. To me, true scholars are defined by their passion, be it in their fields of study or other areas of talent. They stand by their beliefs and aren’t afraid to voice their opinions. Most importantly, they don’t try to be anyone else but themselves. My advice to anyone applying for a scholarship is to stay true to themselves and their aspirations.

Finding Community at NUS
One of the things I’m most grateful for at NUS is the friendships I’ve made and the supportive community I’ve found. In the Department of Geography, I’m surrounded by people who are here not out of obligation, but out of passion, which pushes me to be a better geographer. Outside academics, my friends and neighbours at Pioneer House (a NUS residential community) have become like family. We support each other in everything—sharing meals, studying, and going to CCAs together. They’re the reason NUS feels like my home away from home.
Living My Interests Through CCAS
I’m a part of the NUS varsity bowling team and a planning affiliate for the NUS Geography Challenge 2025 with the NUS Geographical Society. At Pioneer House, I’ve joined the Singing Interest Group, where we destress over weekly karaoke sessions. Looking ahead, I’m excited about opportunities to travel abroad for Geography field studies and represent NUS Bowling in competitions. While I have a lot on my plate, I’m ready to embrace the challenges, supported by people who matter.
