A deep interest in building a sustainable supply of safe food for the nation led Moh Tiang Xin to pursue a degree in Food Science and Technology at the National University of Singapore (NUS). Presently in her final year, Tiang Xin shares her memorable experience and learnings as a Singapore Sustainability Scholar with the Singapore Food Agency (SFA).

A Springboard for Holistic Growth

I believe that a career with SFA would provide me with holistic exposure to understand the complexities and challenges of ensuring a sustainable supply of safe food. This exposure would allow me to contribute meaningfully to society and offer opportunities for personal growth and professional development. Through this scholarship programme, I aspire to deepen my expertise in food safety practices, regulatory frameworks, and risk management strategies. Ultimately, I aim to be a leader in the field and drive positive changes in our nation’s food security and safety.

Additionally, the scholarship has granted me various unique opportunities which supported my growth and learning. Notably, I got to tag along with different teams and departments during my internships at SFA to experience the cross-functional nature of our officers. We also received advice and encouragement to diversify our learning as undergraduates, such as exploring exchange programmes or further studies.

Theory Meets Hands-on Experience

The most significant challenge I encountered was navigating the diverse landscape of experiences, particularly during my time at SFA. While my academic knowledge provided a solid foundation in many aspects, applying these concepts in real-life scenarios proved more complicated. Many tasks required flexibility, adaptability, and consistent on-the-job learning.

I fondly recalled joining my supervisor and his team on their routine farm visits. As a small nation with limited resources and land space, local farmers often face challenges in upkeeping their crops and livestock production amidst rising costs and meeting demand. During these visits, I saw how the team gathered first-hand feedback from the farmers and provided constructive advice and technical guidance. This experience highlighted the significance of our work in building rapport with stakeholders and supporting the agricultural community to achieve our mission.

Through this scholarship programme, I encountered many like-minded individuals who demonstrated immense passion for contributing to food safety and security in their unique ways! Their unwavering commitment deeply inspired me. It also fosters a positive environment that motivates and propels us to greater heights. Our collective passion and dedication allowed us to recognise and appreciate the significance of our collaborative endeavours.

Growing Personally and Professionally

I wish to incorporate my capabilities to create meaningful impact and contribute to the strong work and key policies that SFA has been spearheading in recent years. My career goal would be to contribute to the significance of our work – such as safeguarding the safety of local produce and imported goods. I aspire to lead a team that ensures we remain at the forefront of our field, producing highly valued work.

For aspiring scholars, one important trait is to be open and embrace any learning opportunity that comes your way. Be confident, conscientious, and most importantly passionate about your respective area of interest and how it is relevant to the scholarship programme.

Finally, I would like to share a quote that I live by and hope that it can help aspiring scholars – Every day may not be good, but there is something good in every day. This reminds us that everything is about perspective, and we can all learn from the good and bad experiences!
