Why Did You Choose To Study at NUS?
The reasons for my choice of the study were simple. Beyond academic work, NUS offers the students programmes such as STEER (Study Trips for Engagement and EnRichment) and SEP (Student Exchange Programme). These programmes definitely helped to broaden my perspectives, gain new insights, and form new friendships. Besides, it is my personal belief that a degree in engineering will provide me with the most versatile skill-sets for an enriching life.
Describe Your Work in the Company So Far.
Though I have not officially started work at Sembcorp, I have interned at a utility plant on Jurong Island during my summer break. It was interesting as it allowed me to experience firsthand the life of an operations engineer in a plant. Besides helping to ensure the daily smooth operations of the plant, there were also projects that were aimed at making plant operations more efficient. It was never boring nor mundane but filled with many challenges and unique opportunities to learn on the job.
Why Did You Choose This Scholarship?
I would like to work for a company that has a global presence and is willing to provide opportunities for its employees to develop holistically. Sembcorp is a firm that meets both criteria with businesses around the world and a solid track record in utilities, marine and urban development. There are plenty of opportunities for me to learn and grow.
My particular interest is in the utility business where the firm continues to expand its capabilities to meet the ever-growing demand for power and clean water. I hope to be part of the team that helps to change lives and impact millions.
How Does Sembcorp Select Its Scholars?
There are three stages in the scholarship selection process, namely the selection round, followed by the activity-based assessment and the panel interview. Hence applicants are evaluated based on wide-ranging aspects instead of just looking at their academic achievements.
In the activity-based assessment, applicants are divided into different groups where they have to work together to solve unique problem sets. The selection panel could then see how each applicant interacts with each other and functions in a team. During the session, the applicants will also learn more about the company and decide if it is the right fit for them. In the last stage, successful applicants from the previous rounds will be interviewed by the senior management of Sembcorp.
What Do You Think Are Your Strengths?
I will describe myself as a fairly confident person with a positive outlook on life. I am determined to achieve what I set out to do, and I am willing to put in the extra work to reach my goals.
