Full Circle: A Scholar’s Journey of Opportunity, Growth, and Giving Back

SJI International Scholar - Marcus

From embracing a new academic challenge to raising funds for the next generation of scholars, Chin Yi Kai Marcus’s time at St. Joseph’s Institution (SJI) International has been defined by determination, gratitude, and service. Now in Grade 11 and his first year of the IB Diploma Programme, Marcus reflects on how the scholarship has shaped not only his education but also his values, ambitions, and commitment to contributing to the community.

A Challenge Worth Taking

I was ready for a new challenge when my parents told me about the SJI International Local Scholarship. As I looked into the school, I was drawn to its educational philosophy—one built on holistic development, service, and the core Lasallian values. I quickly realised it was more than just a school; it was a community where I could push myself academically, grow personally, and be part of something bigger.

The Beginning of New Possibilities

My journey with SJI International has been filled with memorable moments, but the one that stands out most is the day I received my acceptance email. It was a moment of gratitude and excitement, knowing I had been given the chance to step into a new environment and truly test my potential. The scholarship was not only the key to this opportunity but also a huge relief for my family, easing a significant financial burden for which we remain immensely thankful.

From IGCSE to IB: Finding My Footing

Naturally, the path wasn’t without its challenges. The academic leap from the IGCSE programme to the rigours of the IB Diploma was significant, and my grades initially reflected that struggle. However, the supportive environment at SJI International made all the difference. With the expert guidance of my teachers and the unwavering support of my peers, I was able to navigate this challenge, make significant improvements, and find my footing.

Finding a Sense of Belonging

What truly surprised me was the strong sense of community within the scholarship programme. It offers far more than financial support, creating a genuine feeling of belonging. Through various events, we connect with fellow scholars and members of the school board, building a network of support and friendship.

Paying it Forward

A particularly powerful experience was my involvement in SINGALA IV, our school’s biennial fundraising event. Working alongside other scholars to raise funds for the very scholarship programme that has given us so much was incredibly meaningful. It gave me a profound understanding of the generosity that sustains this community and allowed me to meet the donors who wholeheartedly believe in making a difference in a student’s life. It reinforced my desire not only to succeed but also to give back.

A Future Beyond Myself

Looking ahead, I hope to pursue a career in economics or a similar field. My goal is not just to build a successful career, but to ensure I am contributing positively to the community around me. The SJI International Scholarship has given me more than just an education; it has provided me with a foundation built on strong values and a commitment to service. It has opened up a future of possibilities and has empowered me to strive for my goals, and for that, I will always be grateful.
