167 individuals received scholarships and grants from Minister for Education Mr Desmond Lee at the Ministry of Education (MOE) Scholarship Ceremony held at Sands Expo & Convention Centre today. For the first time, the Scholarship ceremony brought together recipients of the MOE Teaching Scholarships, MOE Teaching Award, and the Singapore Teaching and Academic Research Talent Scheme (START) Awards.
MOE Teaching Scholarships and MOE Teaching Award
2. This year, 146 students received the MOE Teaching Scholarships and MOE Teaching Award.
3. The MOE Teaching Scholarships and Award are awarded to individuals who possess a strong passion for education and teaching. Recipients will be sponsored for their undergraduate tuition fees and receive an allowance. They will also be given developmental opportunities to prepare themselves for an enriching career as an educator, and to hone their leadership skills.
START Awards
4. START provides a suite of undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships and awards to Singaporeans interested in an academic career at the Autonomous Universities (AUs), strengthening the pool of Singaporean talent in both research and teaching. Awardees study at local or overseas institutions, before embarking on their careers in Singapore. The awards include the Ministry of Education – Autonomous University (MOE-AU) Scholarship, Overseas PhD Scholarship, Overseas Post-Doctoral Fellowship, Early Career Awards, and the Inauguration Grant. Since its establishment in 2015, START has supported 265 Singaporeans across more than 30 disciplines, including Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics disciplines as well as the Humanities and Social Sciences.
5. A total of 21 Singaporeans were awarded scholarships and grants under START this year. This year’s awardees are pursuing studies in fields beyond the current range of disciplines, including Experimental Psychology, Volcano Seismoacoustics and Cardiac Rehabilitation. Details of the various START schemes and the list of award recipients are in the Annex.
