The QS World University Rankings 2026 were announced on 19 June 2025. These highlight the best institutions of higher learning across the world, ranking them based on a combined score from measuring a variety of indicators of success, including student experience, university partnerships, research activity and faculty qualifications. Whether or not you secure that scholarship offer, these are the places to aim for.
1 Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
MIT has consistently remained at the top of the rankings for 14 consecutive years now, making it a surefire pick for a quality education. It is the only university to score a perfect 100 in the rankings, thanks to its full marks in Faculty/Student Ratio, Employer Reputation and Employment Outcomes. Score a spot in MIT and you’ll be set to take on the world.
2 Imperial College London
The only UK University to specialise solely in science, technology, engineering, medicine and business (STEMB). This world-leading institution is known for innovation, excellence and employability, with its graduates going on to tackle world issues with scientific solutions.
3 Stanford University
An old name with a rich reputation for academic excellence, Stanford University boasts one of the largest university campuses in the US, with 18 interdisciplinary research institutes and seven schools. It is known for a vibrant history and arts curriculum, though all its courses are outstanding.
If you know your subject, be sure to know the universities in the know as well. For example, Johns Hopkins University is renowned for its contributions to Life Sciences and Medicine, while Peking University has a strong presence in the study of Classics & Ancient History.
4 University of Oxford
The University of Oxford, mainstay of books, plays and academic dreams, is the oldest university in the English-speaking world and the world’s second-oldest university in continuous operation. It prides itself on its reputation for world-class research in both the humanities and sciences, positioning Oxford as a place for intellectual debate and academic rigour.
5 Harvard University
The oldest American university, Harvard, is a fixture of many a student’s aspirations. Its liberal philosophy provides fertile ground for intellectual breakthroughs, while the world-class facilities and libraries offer endless research possibilities. The university also takes pride in maintaining a supportive and collaborative community that makes student life enjoyable and fulfilling.
